Haha, I haven’t been called a little monster before . I’ve been getting into lots of songwriting and recording…I’m always doing new material.

So, tell me a bit about what you’re here to promote?

I’m so excited about my new single “Automatik”. It’s all about going back to a relationship you just can’t get away from. Preach!!

Lol. Well… I do this dance called the “Morphing Butterfly”….it’s a hybrid of the Caribbean dance called The Butterfly with my own little twist.

Now, clearly we need to get to know each other more, so tell me an interesting fact about you that noone else knows?

I’m very artistic…I love to design patterns and especially love fabric design. I hope that’s interesting enough!

What song do you wish you’d written?

“Gives You Hell” by All American Rejects…that’s my story for sure.

If I was contemplating coming to your show or sitting at home and TV, how would you convince me to come out?

My music takes you on a journey. I love to sing, I love to share…I’d tell you to come out and have a good time. I’ll put a smile on your face.

And if you were to take me on a trip to your hometown, what would be the first place we’d go?

The beach!!! In Barbados the beaches are beautiful…white sand, turqouise water, blue sky..nothing better!!

What’s the best prank you’ve ever pulled on someone?

I was never good at pulling pranks…none to tell there sorry!

And what’s the most daring thing you’ve ever done? Please tell us how it ended up!

Ok I tried to jump on a pogo stick….how did it end up? Me flat on the floor with a bruise on my bum.

If you had to date a member of the same sex (or opposite sex if the case may be) who would it be? Mine would ALWAYS be Angelina Jolie.

Let’s Be Franc

I’m settling in for my phone chat with emerging Brit-Bajan singer-songwriter, Livvi Franc. It’s her day off, and she’s laying on the beach in Barbados soaking up the sun. Her friendly English-Caribbean accent is easy and relaxed, the sound of a young woman who comes across as anything but a bitch. Yet, that is the title of her empowering anthem “Now I’m That Bitch” featuring Pitbull – the rhythmic hot single off her self-titled debut album. Honey spoke with the 21-year-old pop gem to find out why she’s that bitch.

HoneyMag: Your first single, “Now I’m That Bitch” is making quite a statement! Why did you feel the need to write such an empowering song?
Livvi Franc: I think I was at this point in my life where I feel like I got all of the negativity out of my personal life. I just felt very confident. The whole idea of the song is just about being in control and knowing what you want. I just wanted to make that statement … people hear the title “I’m that bitch” and they think “She’s calling herself a bitch?” But you know, the whole thing with the word bitch, everyone has their own meaning for it. For me, I’m making it so that it’s positive: A Babe In Total Control of Herself. I’m reclaiming it. It’s not about being aggressive. It’s not about being feisty or anything like that. It’s just about being in control and knowing what you want in your life and what you don’t want.

How was it working with Pitbull?
It was great! When I finished playing the song, we just felt like it could be great to get that male perspective on the song. And it’s great because people would hear the song and say “okay, it’s female empowerment, it’s a man bashing song.” With the male perspective, it sort of softens it, and makes people realize it’s more universal. It could be both sides. It could be a guy that gets passed by, he could say — well, not that he’s that bitch (laughs) — but he could say now he’s that dude. It was great working with him; he’s got great energy. I’m really happy. I loved the way that he complimented the record.

Was there any chemistry between you two. Did he try to hit on you?
Ah no! None of that, none of that (laughs)!

You are a songwriter and wrote or co-wrote all of the songs on your album.
Yes, I wrote that with the producer Salaam Remi. I had a great time working with him. I learned a lot from him. He’s so talented and so versatile. He really suited my style and I got a bit of his style, so it was a great collaboration.

What is your songwriting process?
I try not to think too much. I just put on the paper whatever comes to me, and sometimes a melody comes to my head, sometimes words come to my head. My main inspiration is just life and people around me and the things that I go through and things people around me go through. So it’s just day to day stuff – people with problems, people’s victories and people’s experiences – all bunched up into a bunch of songs that I’ve written.

You wrote “Walking on Snow” for Jordin Sparks. What was it like working with her?
Well, I actually didn’t write the song with her in the studio. I wrote it [before] with Frankie Storm, and the producer of the song, Lucas. When she heard it after I recorded the demo for it, she went, “Oh I love this song!” We found out afterward that she was recording it. I love her as an artist. I think she’s great. I saw her in concert recently, and I saw her perform the song. It was a magical moment.

Who are you listening to?
Right now I’m listening to La Rue who is out of the UK. I love Santogold. Some of my all-time favorites are Sade, Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys, Gwen Stefani … I love her quirky style.

Describe your sound.
It’s kind of hard [to describe my sound] because I love all different types of music. So when people ask me [to] describe [my] sound, I think everyone usually expects you to say, “well it’s soft rock, or it’s alternative rock” or something like that. But for me it’s a mixture of so many different things all bunched into one, so it’s a fusion of lots of different that I love like reggae – ’cause you know, being from the Caribbean I love reggae music. I love retro music, which is sort of my London background. I love dance music, so it’s a mixture of those three put together. And it’s a great sound.

Do you feel people in the states are embracing British artists and music more and more these days?
I think it’s definitely getting a lot more popular. It’s like the sound of UK pop music is becoming a little bit more easy on the ears. It’s not some straight techno music that just put you in a trance. But it has a little bit more personality in it, so I think that’s what’s making it a lot more popular in the states now. But I really love it; it’s definitely influenced my songs so I hope everyone loves it.

Being Barbados-bred, I’m sure you’ve heard over and over again the comparisons between you and Rihanna. What would you say makes you different. How do you stand apart from her?
I think what makes us different is that we’re two different people really. I really embrace a lot of myself, and my writing and everything, and my music. [Rihanna] embraces herself as an individual. I’m fine with the comparison. She’s beautiful. I love her music and she’s representing Barbados, my hometown. I’m really happy that Bajans are makin it!

Would you welcome the opportunity to work with her in the future?
If that opportunity comes, I would love to.

Is there anyone else you’d like to work with?
I’m thinking of some other features, because on the album right now the only feature is Pitbull. Maybe for my next album I’d love to collaborate with Alicia Keys, Santogold, MIA, Gwen Stefani, maybe Justin Timberlake. I think those will be some cool people. I love Andre 3000, too.

What is your personal style?
I love bright colors, you know, being from the Caribbean. I love bold shapes. Something that’s classy, but sexy at the same time.

Speaking of sexy, do you have an active love life? Are you dating?
I haven’t had any time so far, but I’m just enjoying what I’m doing right now – promoting my single, promoting my music and getting out there and interacting with my fans. I don’t really have time for that right now, but when the time comes I’ll see if I can squeeze in a little bit of dating, but right now I’m good.

How have your friends and family from back home responded to your success?
They are amazing and supportive, and I really have my family to thank for where I am right now. It was really a huge process having to develop myself here and then going to the States. I have no money to really fly all over the place to try to get my music out there. I really have my family and my management team to thank for all that, because they really helped me just get out there.

Tell me one thing you know for sure.
I know for sure that singing and this music career that I’m in is what I was born to do. I’ve been blessed with a talent and all I want to do is get out there and share it.

Do you have any aspirations outside of music?
I’m a true artist, so I love all different types of things. I would definitely love to get into acting. I’d also love to get into fashion. And I love to cook! Maybe I could open a couple restaurants, have some of my personal dishes, my personal recipes on the menu for people to try.

What is your specialty?
Oh God, I have so many! I love Bajan cooking, baked chicken, rice and peas.

Finish this sentence: I’m a Honey girl because…?
I’m a Honey girl because I’m down to earth. I love to laugh. I love to have a good time. I’m happy that I’m here to sing and make people feel good and I hope people appreciate that.

Livvi Franc: She’s a babe in total control

Hailing from Barbados, RnB singer Livvi Franc spent the first few years of her life in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. However at the age of five, she and the family moved to her father’s homeland of Barbados where she grew up. ‘Barbados is very different from England. It’s slower paced, but I used to travel back to England every summer, so I didn’t miss it too much.’
Born Olivia Charlotte Waithe, Livvi Franc is the newest singer-songwriting sensation to come from the islands, and she isn’t surprised to be compared to the world’s most famous Bajan, Rihanna. ‘In this industry you will always be compared to someone – I’m glad it’s someone so gorgeous and successful,’ she laughs.

What’s in a name?
‘The stage name Livvi Franc was inspired by my granddad,’ Livvi explains. ‘His name was Frank Wilson, and when I was about two, he noticed me playing the piano and predicted I was going to be a musician. Sadly he’s no longer here. So, in honour of him, I called myself Livvi Franc; Livvi because it’s my nickname, and Franc because it’s a funkier version of Frank.’
After considering a number of careers from interior design to acting, Livvi went on to impress Jive Records in 2007 with her rendition of an Etta James classic, and soon signed with the label. ‘I hadn’t really found what I wanted to be or what I wanted to do. I was always changing my mind. One week I wanted to do this, the next week it was something else.’
Livvi counts Nelly Furtado, Alicia Keys, Alanis Morissette as her biggest influences and System of a Down as one of her most favourite bands… ever! ‘I listen to everything. On my iPod I have Santigold, La Roux, Nelly Furtado, some soca, and some reggae and some country music.’ Her love for such broad and diverse music is said to be reflected in her debut self-titled album. ‘It’s all the different sides of me come together… There are a couple of tracks with a little reggae vibe, some with more of a UK or retro vibe. It’s different and it all falls into place.’
Livvi co-wrote most of the tracks on her debut album, collaborating with a host of very successful producers and writers such as Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse), RedOne (Lady Gaga), and J.R. Rotem (Natasha Bedingfield, Rick Ross). She claims she wasn’t intimidated working with industry greats. ‘As a writer I count myself lucky. It was good to learn from them, and learn about myself and my own abilities.’

Being a B.I.TC.H
Livvi also wrote Walking on Snow for American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks. However, her greatest achievement to date is penning a track that was picked up by the late Michael Jackson. ‘Michael picked it up because he liked it, and actually recorded half of the track for what would have been his forthcoming album. I think he must have been travelling, so didn’t finish it and now he is unfortunately no longer with us.’
Livvi laughs exuberantly at the title of her playfully assertive debut single, Now I’m That Bitch, ‘I know, it’s like a smack across the face. But I interpret the word as “babe in total control of herself”. She explains how the song ‘comes from personal experiences… I can now say I know what I want. It’s like a female empowerment song.’

Who are your favorite designers? Both modern and classic?

I’m into LaQuan Smith…Balmain, Alexander McQueen, and of course Dolce & Gabbana.

If you had 7 hours in your most favorite city in the world, what would you do?

I love NYC! It is my favorite place of the moment. From Broadway musicals, to getting lost in the city, to browsing stores along 5th Avenue and in the Village…I could go on and on!! If I had 7 hrs…I would definitely, see a musical, have a great meal, watch a movie and go shopping…shoe shopping!

What is your favorite new trend? Your least favorite new trend?

I was just on style.com the other day…I was not really feeling the whole “depression chic” as they’ve coined it…but I’m definitely feeling the boyfriend jean and boyfriend jacket trend.

What’s your favorite beauty product?

Umm…any bar soap, cocoa butter and Vaseline. I’m a simple girl!

The name of your first pet. What type of animal was she/he?

My first pet was a cat named Sherry.

Your absolute favorite must have accessory of the season?

A fabulous pair of sunglasses, of course! Protects your eyes in style!!! Sunglasses make a statement! Get some!

If you had to choose to live with 1 family-The Cosbys’ or The Obamas’ who would it be?

The Obamas’!! Love that they value education, family, community and making a difference!!!

3 things that you often dream about at night

Oh boy…I am the queen of weird dreams. The busier I am the less I dream… that is a good thing for me!

I don’t really choose topics to write about, but I find it easy to write songs based on hurt. it helps me to release. But the songs I really enjoy writing songs that are fun, about having a good time, and that inspire.

How do you feel when you perform/ do you get nervous?
I can’t really describe the feeling, but it’s a mix of butterflies, and the feeling of “I’m ready, let’s go!” feeling lol

Why She’s About to Pop: Livvi Franc lived in Harrogate, England for the first five years of her life before moving to Barbados with her Bajan father, mother and older sister. Is there anybody you admire whose career you’d like to emulate in some way?

Madonna’s longevity and great continued success speaks for itself. She keeps reinventing her sound and image, but remains true to herself. I’ve got lots of stories, emotions and styles to express through my music so people will keep seeing my evolution.

What has been the most surreal moment so far on your rise to fame?

Being papped!!

Who would be your dream collaboration?

I adore Sade — that collaboration would be phenomenal!

Some people have taken offense to the usage of the word “bitch.” What do you have to say to those who misunderstand the song’s message?

I understand that “bitch” has many negative connotations, but my music is all about positivity and “bitch” in this song is “Babe in Total Control of Herself.” It’s about being confident, leading your own life and making your own decisions.

What advice do you have for other young singers who would like to follow in your footsteps?

Always be you!! Don’t imitate. It’s OK to draw inspiration from other artists, but always put as much of yourself in your music and image as possible. Everyone is unique — embrace it!

Are there any bands or artists you enjoy that may come as a surprise to your fans?

I used to listen to System of a Down. LOL…I like to rock out sometimes! Also I’m a Spice Girls freak! I still sing along with every song.
